Of Bark and Bone

Harvey Aughton

He walked beneath the skeleton tree, one of three
Where life descends from apartment concrete blocks

The bud of spring is feint hidden between firewood
And the cold winter smell resting in puddles underfoot

Look on this scene, and the homeowners might despair
But I as him find solace in the tangled shadows

Overlaid, on the rattle and hum of tires hitting the road
A message to the dead, the leave will return, not too soon
