Reflective Waves

We each have our ways
our lines we draw across the city
across the harbour into the sunset

After hours we find clouds our guides
to conversations over cold pints
we can’t hear for the wind, lost

stars of our being guiding lights
shapes and holes to fit ourselves
square pegs searching for direction

or doughnuts the forgotten gaps
in the daytime like derelict houses
graffitied by time forgotten by eyes

The waves gifted us a metronome
rhythms to live by on the pavement
as much a guide as a night light
